How do I reach my potential?
Reaching your potential requires that you know 1. Who or what "you" are, and 2. What you are capable of Step 1 is easily accomplished. Who am I? That is a question we all must answer and continue to answer in some fashion as long as we live. How should one go about it? The past would answer with dogmas, but with recent breakthroughs in philosophy and science, the answers can be much more positive today. Answers that you can be certain of because you can observe them yourself. Take a look. That will be the approach used here. When you start to take a look at yourself, you'll notice you have a body. Is that you? We could at least call this an apparancy, because your body is used by most everyone to recognize you. However, if you changed your body by any of the many techniques current, would this change the essential you? Not really. So, what else is there? Are you a mind? Well, again, let us inspect this possibility. Sitting still and quietly taking a look, you'll probably notice "pictures." If you close your eyes, maybe you see a scene from the past, or some sensation comes to your attention. In fact, a lot of research has been done in this area, and we're getting closer, but let's go one more step: What's looking at these pictures and appreciating these sensations? Let's call that awareness You. In Scientology, this essence is called a "thetan." Simply, you are a being who is aware of being aware.
Now, what are the properties of this thetan? At first glance, it seems rather invisible. Don't make the mistake of psychology and assume that because you can't touch it that it isn't real. You can test for the reality of this "awareness unit". Just go out and ask someone, "How are you?" The answer you get will come from one of these thetans. We're talking about the essential you, the one who decides and does and makes up new directions to go just to be interesting. So right off the bat, as far as properties go, we have abilities: the ability to create and the ability to perceive. We have gotten somewhere. Notice there are no needful limits on these abilities. What about other properties? Is this awareness unit only a function of the brain? We can dispense with that theory pretty easily. For over 100 years, the sciences that use the idea that thinking is done by the brain have gotten exactly nowhere in solving the problems of the mind. That line of research has dead-ended in ineffective drugs with pretty ghastly effects. The word "cure" has ceased to exist in that field. One can only manage symptoms to a certain degree, they say. Now there is a book that cuts through the confusion on the properties of you, a living awareness unit, and gives it to you straight. I recommend that you get it and read it. It is: Scientology: A New Slant On Life.
