How did I get into Dianetics and Scientology?
Dianetics Handles the Mysteries of the Mind
Way back in 1976, I got my first copy of Dianetics. Had never even heard of Scientology. Mental phenomena had always been presented as deep and difficult, but in just a few days of reading Dianetics, The Modern Science of Mental Health, the confusion was gone! Dianetics had the answers and they were simple answers.
If it's this easy to know something about the mind by reading Dianetics, then how come everybody doesn't know Dianetics? If you were interested in reaching your potential, Dianetics would be vital. So I crossed the bridge to MIT and checked with some very bright people: "Is it possible to know about the mind? I've been reading Dianetics and..." The looks I got ranged from sheepish to dull to resentful, but I never could get a straight answer. Until it hit me. To know about something requires an ability to confront it. The guys at the school could confront test tubes, but not each other so well. Or Dianetics. I got more interested.
What would stop someone from jumping into a subject which removes his mental blocks and disabilities? Dianetics wasn't that hard a read. Reaching your potential not important? No way. But hmmm... That's really the same question as, "How do you make a slave?" Convince him that an area of life is too dangerous or off limits, make simple realities about his own mind "too complex", and he's then dependent on Experts to run that part of his life for him. "I'm a Doctor! Reaching your potential will only be successful if you take this pill or get this operation!" How cruel! Dianetics doesn't work that way. Ever seen what those pills and operations do? That's no way for reaching your potential. But, with Dianetics, there is a way.
Even if you decide that Dianetics is all wrong, at least you'll have looked. After looking for yourself, you'll know better what the truth really is, whether Dianetics or something else. And that's a solid step towards reaching your potential. Read Dianetics as a basic step.
Scientology is a Science
I was happy with Dianetics. Nothing conflicted with what I knew from biology, cytology, or even sociology. But Scientology? I don't know. Well, Scientology was a coordinated body of usable information but still...
It was quite a leap going from a mechanical study of Dianetics to Scientology. Dealing with spirits? I'd always thought of that as spooky occult stuff. Yuck. But finally putting that aside and forcing myself to confront the subject matter of Scientology, it wasn't really that big a step to shift from dealing with mental machinery to the operator of that machinery with Scientology. Spiritual freedom was the aim of Scientology. If freedom is valuable, I reasoned, doing some study of Scientology is a small price to pay. And Scientology turned out to be an easier subject than I thought. It wasn't about some nebulous stuff. Scientology was just about me. And you. And reaching your potential. What are the properties of the essential you? That's Scientology. High time someone researched this area.
Ever since then, I've worked with Scientology one way or another. Applied to tutoring failing schoolchildren, Scientology boosts comprehension. Chronic pain? I've helped more people than I can remember with Scientology processes.
